The two WhatsApps
There are two ways businesses use WhatsApp:
WhatsApp Business App — the free app on your phone. You download it, verify your business number, and you're live. Messages arrive on your phone. You reply manually. Most small businesses use this.
WhatsApp Business API — a programmatic interface that connects to platforms like respond.io, WATI, Zoko, or your own custom system. Messages route through software. Multiple agents can reply. Chatbots can automate responses. Costs money monthly.
Both work for receiving leads from Google Ads. The difference is how you connect them to Tagless for conversion tracking.
Tracking with the Business App (manual forwarding)
Your WhatsApp link on your site includes a Tagless reference in the pre-filled text. Customer sends the message. You receive it on your phone.
When it's a real lead, you forward the message to your Tagless WhatsApp number. Tagless matches the reference to the Google Ads click. Conversion syncs.
Pros: No cost, no setup, no technical knowledge. You're the qualification layer — your judgement is the filter.
Cons: Manual step. If you get 30+ leads a day, forwarding gets tedious. If you forget to forward, the conversion doesn't track.
Best for: Businesses getting fewer than 15-20 WhatsApp leads per day.
Tracking with the Business API (automatic)
Your WhatsApp platform (respond.io, WATI, etc.) receives messages. A webhook routes incoming messages to Tagless's universal endpoint. Tagless scans for the reference, matches to the GCLID.
On the paid Tagless plan, AI listens to the conversation and qualifies leads automatically based on your prompt. No manual step.
Pros: Fully automatic. Scales to any volume. AI qualification is consistent and instant.
Cons: Requires a WhatsApp API platform (monthly cost). Initial webhook setup (one-time, 5 minutes).
Best for: Businesses getting 15+ WhatsApp leads per day, or agencies managing multiple clients.
Starting on the app, graduating to the API
Most businesses should start with the WhatsApp Business App and the forward method. It's free, it works immediately, and it gives you data.
Once you see the value — Smart Bidding improving, CPA dropping, better leads coming in — and the volume justifies automation, upgrade to the WhatsApp API with a platform and switch to automatic tracking.
Tagless works with both. The transition doesn't require changing your tracking setup, just adding the webhook from your new platform.
The bottom line
Don't let "I'm not on the API" stop you from tracking WhatsApp conversions. The Business App with manual forwarding is a perfectly valid workflow. Millions of businesses run on it. The five seconds it takes to forward a message is five seconds that saves you hundreds in wasted ad spend.
