SMS is invisible to Google Ads
When a visitor clicks your ad, lands on your site, and taps an SMS link, they leave the browser for their messaging app. Google Ads sees a click and a page visit. It doesn't see the text message that followed.
For businesses where SMS is a primary enquiry channel — trade services, healthcare, local services — this means a significant portion of leads are invisible to Google Ads.
How Tagless tracks SMS
Tagless detects SMS links (tel: and sms: links) on your site and captures the GCLID at the moment of the tap. The interaction is logged in your dashboard with full campaign attribution.
You qualify which taps became real text conversations. Not every tap leads to a message — some are accidental, some people change their mind. Only confirmed leads sync to Google Ads as conversions.
Why this matters
If SMS drives even 10-15% of your leads and those leads are invisible to Google Ads, Smart Bidding is making decisions without 10-15% of the data. The campaigns and keywords driving your SMS leads get zero credit. Over time, Smart Bidding deprioritises them in favour of channels it can measure — even if those channels perform worse.
Making SMS visible to Google Ads corrects this bias and lets Smart Bidding optimise across all your lead channels equally.
